HISTORY AND ART 

Fonded by the Etruscan on the present Santa Maria Capua Vetere it suffered the Lombard ,Angevin,Swabian and Norman domination. Of the primitive Lombard core has to be reminded the Torre Campanaria, erects from the count Landone, next to the episcopal palace and the cathedral. The Palazzo Fieramosca is a document of Angevin time and containes some lombard and Renaissance architecture traces. On the ancient urban part palaces and green spaces churchs and convents, barracks and noble style fortifications blend.

At the gate of the town , in the small centre of Sant’Angelo in Formis, is the homonym basilica paleocristiana, rises on the ruins of the old temple of Diana Tifatina. The church has a front enriched of four arks to sixth burden and the central one to all sixth. In the central apse dominates a fresco representing Cristo Pantocratore next to his four evangelists.On the left side of the Basilica there is a bell tower with a square plant.

Going through the way of Volturno we arrive at Caiazzo, town that dominates the valle Caiatina. Very old village ,in old days it was surrounded with mura megalitiche. Many gentilitial palaces of different epoches and many churchs of various importance.The Castle of the Femineis, surrouded with a double town–wall and dominates the town. Not far are the communes of Ruviano and Alvignano. The first, much known as Raiano, due its celebrity to the old castle. Ad Alvignano., On the highest of a hill is the old sanctuary of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built in the XVI century.

 

In the Museo Campano di Capua, particularly interesting and rich of very old founds, the most singular one is the collection of about 2000 statues in grey tuff-datable between V and the A.C. century-representing mothers with children in their arms. It was an ex-voto given to thank Matuta, Italic goddess of fertility.

LOCAL PRODUCTS

The typical products of the zone are the olive oil and the wine. Really good the cheeses, fresh or seasoned, and the bread, that still comes fired in the wood ovens. Capua is famous for its cow buffalo `mozzarella' production.

GASTRONOMY

The land products are the most consumed: soups and `minestrone'-with any standard of flesh, are always on the table of every good restaurant. A classic dish of Caserta inhabitant is the pumpkin with the beans. Or the "perciatelli", similar pasta to the "bucatini" which name remembers the French denomination puncture from "percer", to cook always with the beans.
