PADULA

HISTORY AND ART

From the frenetic life of Amalfi we go to the quiet of Padula. At about 600 metre above sea level, on a characteristic conical hill rises Padula in which country has the center the very famous Certosa di San Lorenzo. The wide construction includes numerous cloisters, courtyards and gardens. The front, inspired from the late mannerism has been influenced by the Gothic art in the construction of the pinnacles that dominate the superior loggia.

The internals are extremely rich and certainly influenced by the Baroque. The high altar is entirely mosaic with mother pearl files and around it there are some oil painting. Choirs are in finely inlaid wood and the vault is rich in gold stuccoes and frescoes. The sacristy is characterized by the incised gates, the majolica altar and the white marble statue of Maria Maddalena.

In the vicinity of Padula is possible to visit the Grotte di Penosaei. The access to the cave is much evocating it happens by a raft that crosses a pond and allows the visitor to reach the big central cavern from which begins the run on foot between stalactites and stalagmites.
