SAN GERARDO
MATERDOMINI

HISTORY AND ART

Abandoning the places dear to the devotees of Padre Pio, we move on now, to Materdomini, that at 600 metre above sea level, dominates from high the valley of Sele. Here an other saint has donated graces and operated miracles. The celebrity of this place in fact, is due above all to San Gerardo Maiella He arrived in 1754 to the convent of the Redemptorists friars established from Sant'Alfonso Maria De Liguori.

Sanctuary of St. Gerardo Maiella

The Sanctuary is kept the Redemptorists. Called by Bishop Giuseppe Nicolai, the monks of St. Alfonso Maria de Liguori founded, in 1748, a house next to an already existing 16th century church dedicated to Santa Maria de Silere, which had been badly damaged by the earthquake of 1731. The church has been extended and reconstructed several times over the centuries.
The construction of the new church with ribbed dome began in 1970, planned by Giuseppe Rubino to preserve the remains of St. Gerardo Maiella (1726-1755). Nearby, some museum rooms have been built to preserve the relics of the Saint.
